And like all the other years she plans to have special Oscar screenings. Her poor brother here has no such luck. The rentals here suck. The trash that is kept by the local guy would kill any normal person. The last guy I tried giving advice on what movies to buy went out of business, as no one else touched those movies. Hence I refrain from publicly airing my choices. I have seen any amazing amount of tripe, B grade movies with horrid acting and bad plotlines and shoddy productions.
I now present reviews of a few of the selected gems that graced my viewing pleasure.
Note to Sis: The Academy of Motion Picture would never even touch these pics. I would advise the same.
1. Day of Wrath: Someone is killing families in mediaeval Spain during time of Inquisition and these families have a secret to hide. The hero who is the sheriff sets out to find and uncovers few secrets. The DVD got stuck and I couldn't complete the movie.
2. Behind Enemy Lines 2 - The Axis of Evil: The US President is shown few secret North Korean nuclear facilities satellite pics (Surprise Surprise!!!) but instead of bombing it they decide to send an elite Navy Seal team. Mid way the plan gets aborted but with 4 people already parachuted inside North Korea - the Hero, the guy who has a new born baby and wife waiting back home, a guy into some sort of Korean mysticism, and the Customary Black Guy(CBG). After some firefight, the CBG and the mystic are finished with the hero and the family man captured. The hero gets tortured but just in time remembers his Seal Trainer who coincidentally was black and pushed him beyond his limits(Cliche). They are taken away by another North Korean army unit with an officer who speaks fluent English and looks like Jacky Chang. After another firefight with the help of South Korean spies, Our Heroes escape. The Naval guard is elated and the guy wants to turn a hero and volunteers to complete the mission. They manage to complete it with a very tame ending.
What was missing: Acting, obligatory Korean chick who makes the hero fall in love with her.

Up next reviews of Sniper 1, Sniper 2 and Sniper 3.

Who Watches the Watchmen?

Currently reading "Watchmen" by Alan Moore. But what probably people don't realize is, that its not difficult to go out into nature, right inside the city.
I have passed the Tuglakabad area many times without realizing that there is the Asola Wildlife Sanctuary there. So I went for a 5 km long nature walk through the forest. It was organized by a friend of a friend and I tagged along. There were close to 15 people and kids in the group. The walk started at 5:30 PM, an odd time I thought at that time. But later I realized that was the best time.
Walking in the still of the night with the moonlight and the stillness of the scrub forest was something I hadn't experienced earlier. Closing my eyes and standing still with the silence broken by insects and the odd calls of animals gave me a strange peaceful feeling.
As we walked the perimeter of the forest, the only thing that gave away that we were near a city was the sound of bhajan and azzan floating in the wind from the settlements that ringed the sanctuary.
We spotted a whole lot of animals - antelopes, black bucks, weaver birds, peacocks, porcupines, jackals and nil gais. All this took almost 2 hours, which ensured everyone had built a gargantuan appetite.

Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu

Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu - means that a person is only a person through their relationship to others.
Ubuntu - The concept is from South Africa. I agree its to prevent one from the heat, but at what cost? All we do is pump more hot air into the planet.
What we forget is that we are consuming more energy - energy that comes from fossil fuels mostly - to run our ACs. Not to forget the CFCs powering them.
We have had horrid summers all across the world this year and its to continue. Global warming is very much upon us. This may look alarmist, but with the US president being backed by Oil and energy bucks, I doubt we could expect anything substantial for the environment other than plain denials. Reality says otherwise.
I still believe that humans can somehow manage to really outwit nature somehow and stem the warming, either by increasing the ozone concentration or some equally crazy idea. But by when? I gave him one which was horrid but the only one I remembered at that time. He told it to his German girlfriend, H and surprisingly she loved it. H also tells me in her accented English, "Oh -! What gets served is totally tasteless. In fact today they had a curious mixture of karela and paneer, with the karela cut in very broad strips. It looked more like a dish with some animal skin and punjabi masala. The biggest gripe I have is that at least a meal saver such as chicken or mutton isn't served on Tuesdays. Just because there are people who don't eat non-veg on Tuesdays doesn't mean that a very large number of people who can eat non-veg on Tuesdays or any other fucking day are denied their food.

Blue October

Just heard "A Quiet Mind" by Blue October. I've finished reading Liar's Poker and I must say that its a really good book. Though the underlying theme is of finance, specifically bonds, yet the book should be required reading for just about anyone in the corporate world. It just goes to show how self-destructive, fiefs and office politics can be in a company.
My interest in finance has been generally high. This book has stoked the interest further. Kids, powercuts all conspire to break my reverie.
yesterday I walk along to the salon for my haircut. I plunk myself into the chair, and that puts me into a state of heightened peace as I muse on the relative merits and demerits of bombing Iran. But that was not to be. First up was 36 Quai des Orfèvres, a french movie, which turned out to be pretty good. As most things happen, many of the reasons were because of a girl and blind power. I followed it up with Munich and Donnie Drasco. Donnie Drasco for me didn't show something new, I found it to be quite similar to another great movie Goodfellas.
